Digital Media suite art courses offer a diverse array of artistic skills and expertise. This degree program focuses on developing professional design and production processes for the visual media industry. The degree program prepares students to work in digital video, animation, web design, and graphic design. It also provides an understanding of the history, technology, and culture of digital media. Whether you are aspiring to become a multimedia journalist or web project manager, a Digital Media degree will enable you to develop a career in this exciting field.
The first year of the Digital Media degree is dedicated to building a solid foundation in fine arts. Students learn to create conceptual work and explore new ways of communicating ideas. They also begin to develop their aesthetic awareness through production activities. These include digital photography, video, and coding.
A second year of study involves a study of the history and development of digital media and other visual communication techniques. In addition, students are required to complete a series of individual portfolio assessments and critiques. Additionally, weekly meetings are held to discuss and critique student work.
During this final semester, students will complete a culminating project. The project involves creating a marketable resume package, a website, and a social media presence. Upon completion of the course, students will present their work in a student exhibition. As part of this assessment, students will receive a passing score on the Communications division scoring rubrics.
The program also focuses on the application of traditional fine arts techniques in the digital world. Using Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, and Corel Painter, students will learn how to create graphic designs. Moreover, each student is assigned a Wacom Intous stylus pen to use in digital drawing.
Throughout the duration of the program, students attend panel discussions with professionals in various digital media fields. Additionally, they will participate in an annual student exhibition. Some students may even be eligible for early job placement. However, additional educational requirements may be needed for some careers.
During the first year of study, students take classes in the history of art, software, and computer skills. Their work is evaluated on a weekly basis, and students are provided with a professional grade printer.
Throughout the semester, students will complete projects in a wide range of creative disciplines. Using a variety of digital imaging tools, students will produce video projects and animation for web delivery. All of these skills are aimed at developing a strong practical knowledge of digital media.
Digital Media graduates work as e-business consultants, web project managers, and social media managers. They also create technologically sound media pieces, such as websites and podcasts. Although many digital media artists specialize in specific areas, such as animation, graphic design, or video, all of these skills are necessary for success in the field.
